The digital magazine newsstand from Apple(TM) in iOS 5 provides the proper app based usability to iPod, iPhone, and iPad mobile and tablet devices. The newsstand app brings publication subscription functions to a managed newspaper and magazine applications shelf allowing for convenient access & visibility to the most recent publication issues. But the future digital newsstand will need to be as open as the magazine software and tools used to create cross media publications that can be accessed by any device – smartphone or tablet magazine format.

This week the Kindle Fire showed us one more magazine newsstand foundation that will probably put more interest and effort into their periodicals.

Let’s just hope they make the magazine publishing software tools easy for all publishers to use and not just those largest publishers capable of signing major deals. The original publisher software tools and information for publishing to the Kindle left magazine developers wondering if they really understood the market.

Note from the Magazine Media Conference 2011 article by Mashable on how #magazine publishers are changing the way they present content. The traditional paginated print magazine format will evolve in the digital age and the large magazine publishing groups will be able to adapt to every device under the sun. But ultimately, a true cross media magazine solution will need to allow the rest (and the innovative publishers) to present content in an open tablet / digital magazine newsstand.

Magazine publishers will begin to see dozens and then hundreds of other iPad or tablet magazines and realize that they too must invest in the people, software, and workflows to grow their digital magazine brand. The growth will mimick the rise of digital magazine editions which is now a brand extension (perhaps on multiple platfoms) for most publishers. The rapid digital magazine growth accelerated just 3 years ago with publishers using one of a dozen core digital platform service providers and also a few in-house digital magazine builds.

The magazine publisher or web content manager oversees several key publishing aspects from the website administration login:

Content – Content is organized by parent “Sections” and child “Categories” for all key elements of the magazine publisher’s web based taxonomy.

Menus – Menus control the magazine’s main navigation and sub navigation. The subscriber or reader guest will access all content based on the layout and organization of the menu structure to categories, pages, or website functionality components.
